Yale-New Haven Hospital awards seven minority scholarships

NEW HAVEN — Over the past 18 years, Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has awarded scholarships totaling more than $324,500 to minority students seeking degrees in nursing and allied health fields. Minority high school students who live in greater New Haven are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

YNHH recently awarded seven $2,000 scholarships, renewable annually for the length of the student’s program.

The seven students are: Kimberly Lee of Clinton, Shane Magazine of New Haven, and Chioma Ogbejesi of West Haven, all of whom attend the University of Connecticut. Tyler Tucker, West Haven, attends Temple University, Pennsylvania; Natalia Hincapie, West Haven, attends Quinnipiac University; Jazmyn Thompson, New Haven, attends Hampton University; and Caya Belton, West Haven, attends St. Vincent’s nursing school in Bridgeport.

"We are intensely proud of this successful scholarship program which benefits students from throughout greater New Haven," said Kevin Myatt, senior vice president, Human Resources. "We are helping worthy students pursue a degree in health care. Our hospital, patients and community are enriched when some of these students choose to pursue their careers at Yale-New Haven Hospital after they graduate."

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 3,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
