Anesthesia and Pain Management

The pediatric anesthesia and pain management team at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital provides high-quality, compassionate and family-centered care for infants, children and adolescents.

The anesthesia and pain management staff has extensive expertise in caring for patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery, pediatric surgical oncology procedures, and procedures for fetal congenital anomalies, trauma surgery, outpatient surgery, cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery. We also have an active acute pain control service.

Our primary mission is to advocate for each child before, during and after a procedure to ensure he or she receives safe, quality and pain-free care. Our anesthesia and pain management service cares for children both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Whenever possible, complementary and alternative therapies are used to help with any pain. Pediatric dedicated operating rooms, presurgical evaluation areas and post anesthesia care units allow the care teams to more effectively address both the medical and emotional needs of children and their parents.

Reducing anxiety before a child’s surgery

Each year about a million children under the age of four in the United States have surgery with general anesthesia, leaving millions of parents worried about how to prepare their families. Much of that worry centers on the anesthesia aspect of the surgery.
