Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team

Yale New Haven Children's Hospital provides critical care transport to infants, children and young adults (up to 21 years of age) who require a higher level of care not readily available at outlying medical facilities. Through specialized equipment and training, our Pediatric Critical Care Transport team extends the expertise of the pediatric intensive care unit to a critically ill or injured child during transport.

Our transport program includes specialty ambulances as well as two SkyHealth emergency patient transport helicopters. The specialty ambulances are dedicated to safe and efficient delivery of critically ill children to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. Each SkyHealth helicopter has full ICU capabilities and is staffed by highly skilled medical professionals. 

Our transport service covers the state of Connecticut and within a 200-mile radius of New Haven, CT. Our staff maintains required certification in BLS, PALS, ACLS and trauma. Our transport teams are composed of highly skilled pediatric nurses and paramedics who possess advanced training and flight credentialing. The team is trained and equipped to provide full ICU capabilities, monitoring and advanced airway and ventilation management during transport. En route, the team is in continuous contact with an in-house board-certified pediatric ICU physician, functioning as medical control. When the team is deployed, contact is made with the referring medical team to provide reassurance and advice prior to the team’s arrival.

SkyHealth is a joint venture of Yale New Haven Health and Northwell Health partnering with Med-Trans corporation, which provides two helicopters and aviation services. American Medical Response (AMR) provides the team with our two specially equipped pediatric critical care ambulances.
