Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures

Overview

We offer an array of endoscopic and advanced gastrointestinal and hepatological procedures to diagnose and treat underlying conditions. If needed our procedures can be done with pediatric anesthesiologists as an added comfort to patients.

  • Upper endoscopy and colonoscopy with biopsy: the most common pediatric procedures where a tube with a camera at the tip is used to visualize the GI tract and obtain biopsies.
  • Liver biopsy
  • Esophageal variceal management with endoscopic banding and sclerotherapy
  • Transnasal endoscopy: a new and innovative procedure in older children and adolescents that can evaluate the esophagus without sedation. Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital is the first center in the Northeast to offer this program.
  • Feeding tube placement and care
  • Portal hypertension surgical shunt procedures (Meso-Rex shunt, splenorenal shunt)
  • Paracentesis
  • Dilation of strictures
  • Botox injection in certain esophageal and colonic diseases
  • pH impedance studies: this test is done to assess the presence of acid reflux
  • Esophageal and anorectal manometry: these studies can be done to assess the motor function of the esophagus and rectal muscles. Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital is the only center in Connecticut offering these procedures.
  • Liver transplant
