Your pre-admission testing visit assesses your health status, focuses on your anesthesia requirements and prepares you for your upcoming surgery and hospital visit. It also gives you the chance to speak with hospital staff so you know what to expect on the day of your surgery.
If your surgeon's office has already made a pre-admission appointment for you, you will receive an automated phone call with the date and time. Your pre-admission appointment can be scheduled up to 30 days before your surgery. That way we have time to get all the test results.
Your pre-admission testing visit will be scheduled for one hour, although it could take more or less time.
On the day of your visit, please bring:
- Your current medications and/or completed medication card
- A list of your previous surgeries
- Any important information about your health history
- Your health insurance card or information
- Current, valid personal identification

The Pre-Admission Testing Center on the is on the first floor of the hospital's East Pavilion. On the day of your scheduled visit, come to the main hospital entrance at 20 York Street and take a right when you enter the lobby.

Your pre-admission testing visit will include:
- Meeting with a Patient Accounts Representative, who will review your insurance coverage, as well as any financial issues. Please bring your insurance card(s) to this visit.
- Meeting with the Patient Care Associate or nurse, who will take your vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure), draw blood and perform an EKG (electrocardiogram), if needed.
- Meeting with a member of the anesthesia team, who will ask you about your health history.
- An explanation of your upcoming surgery, including the chance to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have about anesthesia, surgery and your hospital stay.
Before you leave, you will receive both verbal and written instructions about:
- When to stop eating/drinking before your surgery
- Which medications to take or stop and when
- Where to go when you get to the hospital
- How to find out the time you should arrive on the day of your surgery
- Telephone numbers to contact us if you have questions or concerns
