Ocular Oncology
Physicians at the ocular oncology program at Smilow Cancer Hospital work closely with leading experts in radiation oncology, pathology, medical oncology, pediatric oncology, lymphoma and leukemia, neurosurgery and other fields to provide state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive care for eye tumor patients.
The highly trained ophthalmologists specialize in the diagnosis and management of a variety of eye tumors and cancers, many of which are serious life-threatening conditions. The ocular oncology program uses state-of-the-art technology to provide cutting-edge treatments to patients using the newest techniques, including delivering chemotherapy and radiotherapy directly to the affected area with minimal side effects. Our physicians aim to improve the prognosis of these conditions and conserve the eye and sight of each patient.
Our ocular oncologists provide diagnosis and treatment of the following conditions:
- Benign tumors (choroidal nevus, choroidal hemangiomas)
- Conjunctival tumors
- Malignant melanoma (iris, ciliary body, choroids, conjunctiva, eyelid, orbit and metastatic melanoma to the eye)
- Ocular metastasis from systemic cancers
- Pseudotumors
- Retinal tumors (retinal hemangioblastomas also known as retinal capillary hemangiomas, and other vascular tumors, astrocytic tumors, adenomas and adenocarcinomas of the retinal pigment epithelium, and others)
- Retinoblastoma (most common intraocular malignancy in children)
- von Hippel Lindau disease, Neurofibromatosis, Sturge Weber syndrome
