Yale New Haven Children's Hospital highly skilled specialty physicians and nurses provide emergency treatment for the full range of illness and injury at the Children's Hospital as well as the emergency departments at Greenwich Hospital and Bridgeport Hospital.

Our pediatric emergency department is dedicated exclusively to the care of children from infancy to age 20. Treatment is overseen by attending physicians, trained in pediatric emergency medicine and care is delivered by specially trained emergency medicine physicians, fellows, physician assistants, pediatric residents, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers and technical associates. A certified child life specialist is also available to support children and families. More than 32,500 children are treated in our children’s ED annually.

Patients have access to experts in all areas of pediatric subspecialties including pediatric emergency medicine, toxicology and critical care. Many of the team members are renowned in fields of medical simulation, bedside ultrasound, disaster preparedness, injury prevention, toxicology, medical education and medical informatics.

Areas of Expertise

Behavioral Health Support in the Children’s Emergency Department

The Children’s Emergency Department team provides a safe and secure environment for behavioral health patients and their families. Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital is a designated Urgent Crisis Center by the State of Connecticut for children and adolescents aged 16 and under experiencing a mental health crisis. Crises include:

  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm
  • Feelings of depression, anxiety, or hopelessness
  • Out-of-control behaviors
  • Substance misuse
  • Any mental health crisis

Our staff is trained to de-escalate the crisis, complete an evaluation and connect youths and their families to specialized services. No appointment is needed. To contact the Children’s ED directly, please call 203-688-4707.

Pediatric Critical Care Transport

Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital offers safe and timely transport of critically ill or injured infants and children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via a specially equipped ambulance or SkyHealth helicopter. Many patients transported from referral hospitals are admitted directly to our intensive care units. To request one of our transport teams, call Y Access Transfer Center at 888-964-4233.

Improving Child Safety

Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital is a designated Injury Free Site by the national Injury Free Coalition for Kids. As part of our commitment to prevent injuries and educate the community, our Injury Prevention Department provides an array of services to the community to help keep our children safe.

Free Car Seat Check and Installation

Schedule an appointment with one of our certified technicians and learn how to properly secure your child in their car seat as well as how to install the car seat correctly in the vehicle. Appointments are offered at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital, Greenwich Hospital and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.
