Welcome to Yale School of Medicine as you begin your graduate medical education at Yale New Haven Hospital.
More than 1,500 clinical faculty in 19 clinical departments at over 100 practice sites throughout Connecticut currently oversee the training of over 1,200 interns, residents, and fellows at Yale.
Here you will find a long tradition of leadership in medicine and biomedical research, with talented mentors who will eagerly support your scholarly interests. Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital scientists and physicians have made many landmark contributions to clinical medicine.
These include the first successful use of penicillin in the U.S., the first use of chemotherapy to treat cancer, the introduction of fetal heart monitoring, and the development of the first insulin infusion pump for diabetes, among others. These advances were made possible through our firm commitment to clinical research.
Along with our robust clinical research enterprise, we have extraordinary strengths in basic science research. Faculty from our top-ranked Department of Immunology collaborate with many departments to study diseases caused by and prevented by the immune system. Our Department of Genetics—the first at any university—is a leader in studying genetic diseases in model organisms and in humans. We are now using personalized medicine to define optimal cancer therapy and sequence the entire genomes of our patients.
