The faculty of the Yale Podiatric Surgery Residency Program believe that three years in residency training are critical to the short- and long-term success of a podiatric surgeon. We strive to provide a broad-based definitive training experience to our residents, building on the foundation laid in podiatric medical school.
Fully accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, this teaching program is a collaboration between Yale New Haven Hospital and Yale University School of Medicine providing residents with a robust clinical and academic experience. Our residents also train in private offices, stand-alone surgery centers and community hospitals to achieve a well-rounded experience. Our program is a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals of the American Colleges of Podiatric Medicine. We participate in the Centralized Application Service for Podiatric Residencies (CASPR), as well as the Centralized Residency Interview Process (CRIP). Your podiatric medical college will guide you through the process.
We generally require applicants to have a GPA greater than 3.2 and a class rank in the top 20 percent. Completion of a Clerkship/Externship at our program is highly recommended.
Using proven traditional surgical training techniques, residents are guided through three years of progressively advanced training, leading to the development of confident, independent diagnosticians and surgeons. The program prides itself in providing instruction in non-operative care, the thought process and preparation leading up to the decision for surgery, the technical aspects of surgery and the post-operative management of surgical patients.
Training includes all aspects of current podiatric practice, but is primarily focused on comprehensive reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle. In addition to surgical training, residents receive ample opportunity to care for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In-house patients are most often admitted directly to the podiatric surgery service where residents are trained in complex medical management. Outpatient experience is provided in both clinic and private office settings and is crucial to later success in practice. The full gamut of consulting services is available at our academic center where residents learn how to function effectively in today's medical environment.
Residents obtain non-podiatric experiences in plastic surgery, orthopedic foot and ankle surgery, vascular, general surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, neurology, rheumatology, infectious diseases, surgical pathology, dermato-pathology, diagnostic imaging, psychiatry and emergency medicine.
There are three main podiatric rotations, each providing a slightly different perspective to the overall experience.
Residents also obtain additional experience at 10 other hospitals and surgical centers throughout the area.
