New Haven— Robert S. Sherwin, MD, an internationally renowned diabetes researcher, has been appointed chief of endocrinology in the department of internal medicine at YNHH and Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Sherwin, C.N.H. Long Professor of Medicine at Yale, has been an attending physician at Yale New Haven since 1974. He is also a consulting physician at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven.
At Yale, Dr. Sherwin directs the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation and the Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center. He is the principal investigator of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) at Yale, the largest research grant awarded to the University, and previously served as the program director of the General Clinical Research Center. The National Institutes of Health, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the American Diabetes Association support his research in diabetes.
The endocrinology section provides diagnosis and therapy to people with endocrine (hormonal) and metabolic diseases and conditions. Multidisciplinary programs include the Diabetes Center, the Bone Center and programs in pituitary, adrenal, thyroid and renal stone diseases.
Dr. Sherwin received his undergraduate degree from Union College in Schenectady, NY, and his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NY. He did his residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and was a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Health before becoming a fellow in Medicine (metabolism) at Yale.
Dr. Sherwin has received numerous awards and professional distinctions for his research and clinical service. He is former president of the American Diabetes Association and winner of the Banting Medal from the American Diabetes Association for lifetime scientific achievement in diabetes. He has published over 300 papers in scientific journals, edited textbooks and book chapters related to diabetes, and has served on national professional committees for the past 30 years.
A native of New York, Dr. Sherwin and his wife have lived in Orange for 35 years. They are the parents of three adult children.
