HIMSS Analytics Honors Yale New Haven Hospital With Stage 7 Award

Thursday, October 1, 2015

CHICAGO (October 1, 2015) - HIMSS Analytics awarded Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH), in New Haven, Conn., with a Stage 7Award. The award represents YNHH’s attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model™ (EMRAM).

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and utilization of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

During the second quarter of 2015, only 3.7 percent of the more than 5,400 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database received the Stage 7 Award.

“We are honored to receive this recognition,” said Thomas Balcezak, MD, chief medical officer Yale New Haven Hospital. “It shows our commitment to using technology in every aspect of our operations from bedside care to business intelligence. Fully adopting the EHR, helps us to provide highly reliable, safer, better care to patients every day.”

YNHH, part of Yale New Haven Health System, is a nationally recognized, 1,541-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital’s two New Haven-based campuses include Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital and Smilow Cancer Hospital.

“It was clear from my visit to Yale New Haven Hospital that they are serious about their mission, vision and values,” said John H. Daniels, CNM, FACHE, FHIMSS, CPHIMS, global vice president, healthcare advisory services group, HIMSS Analytics. “They are leveraging their EHR technology in very innovative ways. They are saving time and improving the patient experience through radiology protocolling using the EHR; their eICU has proven its value particularly when caring for patients in isolation; research recruitment is integrated in the patient portal; and they have proven the value of clinical decision support evidenced by their smoking cessation protocol compliance project. Stage 7 designation is well deserved!”

Yale New Haven Hospital will be recognized at the 2016 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition on Feb. 29-March 4, 2016, in Las Vegas, Nev.
