YNHCH only tri-state hospital to be honored
New Haven, CT (Sept 5, 2018) — Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) has been named by Parents Magazine as one of the 20 most innovative children’s hospitals in the United States, based on the results of its comprehensive survey. The survey, sent to members of the Children’s Hospital Association, sought to identify hospitals with a proven track-record of medical advancements, research, family support, and technical innovations related to children’s health and pediatric medicine. The survey also took into account a hospital’s adoption of the latest technologies and its efforts to share its innovations with other pediatric centers so more kids can benefit. In addition to being the only tri-state hospital honored, YNHCH was one of only three hospitals throughout the Northeast to be so honored.
“This national honor by Parent’s Magazine underscores our commitment to making our patients and their families the center of what we do each day at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital,” said Cynthia Sparer, senior vice president, Operations at Yale New Haven Hospital and executive director, Children’s Hospital and Women’s Services at YNHCH. “We are all very proud of the unique and outstanding care families receive in our nationally-renowned NICU. As a destination hospital, YNHCH continues its efforts to provide the best to all of the children and families we serve.”
Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital was selected specifically for its outstanding commitment to family-centered care by being the first children’s hospital to offer couplet care within its neonatal intensive care unit, where mothers and babies who need medical attention remain together in the NICU. Through the creation of a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit that opened in February of 2018 and by keeping hospitalized moms and babies in the NICU in the same room, YNHCH has established a new national model. The specially-designed two floor NICU has enhanced family-centered care, provides support and works toward improved outcomes and advanced clinical research. With the opening of the new NICU, YNHCH was one of only two hospitals in the U.S. and the first academic medical center and children’s hospital to offer couplet care .This unique model of care strengthens the maternal-infant bond by having them remain together, fostering skin-to-skin contact, supporting breastfeeding and further inducing healing. The unit’s respite rooms, laundry facility and milk room provide further support to parents and families.
“Our winning children’s hospitals collectively published more than 16,000 studies last year. We’re in awe of their pioneering treatments, genius medical devices, improved medications, and the steps they’ve taken to make a hospital stay less stressful for little patients and their families,” said Liz Vaccariello, editor-in-chief of Parents. “But, most of all, we’re grateful that these hospitals have made it a priority to share their innovations with other centers, making it easier for kids to receive excellent care closer to where they live.”
