"Time Out" for Your Safety

In an effort to reduce errors, the entire surgical team will call a "time out" before your procedure begins. During this time, they will review and double-check your name, your pertinent information, the procedure you will be having, the surgical site and who the operating surgeon is. This is an important patient safety measure. If you are awake, listen carefully to what is said. Speak up if you have any questions or concerns.

Preventing Surgical Infections

A surgical site infection can develop after surgery in the part of the body where the operation was performed. To prevent a surgical site infection, our doctors, nurses and members of the surgical team will/may:

• Clean their hands and arms (up to their elbows) with an antiseptic agent just before your procedure
• Remove some of your hair immediately before or during your surgery with electric clippers (razors should never be used)
• Wear special hair covers, masks, gowns and gloves during surgery
• Administer the necessary antibiotics before, during and after surgery (should start within 60 minutes before surgery and continue for 24 hours after surgery)
• Clean the skin at the site of your surgery with a special soap that kills germs
