Charles R. Wira, MD

Charles Wira, MD, is an emergency medicine physician specializing in stroke and emergency critical care.

Dr. Wira is actively involved in multiple clinical trials for ischemic stroke, fostering collaboration between emergency medicine and neurology. He was also instrumental in introducing hypothermia treatment for cardiac arrest survivors, ensuring innovative care for patients experiencing critical emergencies.

As an associate professor of emergency medicine at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Wira has made significant contributions to research in stroke, sepsis, and cardiac arrest, including studies that influenced the 2010 American Heart Association guidelines on cardiac arrest hypothermia. His research also includes evaluating predictors of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage in stroke patients. Dr. Wira has been involved in revising national policies on stroke therapies and has contributed to state-wide stroke initiatives in Connecticut, leading to the passage of legislation to improve stroke care.
