Biography - Daniel R. Cooperman, MD

Daniel R. Cooperman, MD, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, focuses on treating children with developmental and congenital conditions such as cerebral palsy, foot problems, and dislocated hips. He also addresses common childhood issues like in-toeing and Perthes disease, a rare condition that affects the hip joint in children. He has extensive experience treating trauma in children.

Dr. Cooperman's approach includes using innovative techniques to help children recover quickly and improve their quality of life. In caring for children with scoliosis, for example, Dr. Cooperman developed a system to assess bone maturity using existing spinal X-rays, which minimizes radiation exposure and reduces costs.

As a professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Cooperman collaborates with faculty and students to develop and test innovative medical devices that improve patient quality of life. He notes that such projects “have the ability to benefit the patient and, potentially, to benefit mankind.”

Dr. Cooperman earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Medical School and expanded his expertise through a fellowship at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, focusing on childhood hip disorders. He trained in pediatric orthopaedic surgery during a second fellowship at Newington Children's Hospital in Connecticut.
