Dr. McLean started practicing in New Haven in 1994, initially a combination of Primary Care Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. In recent years, he has focused on the diagnosis and management of the wide spectrum of musculoskeletal and inflammatory symptoms and conditions in Rheumatology. Starting in the 1990s, he became active in organized medicine and specifically the American College of Physicians (ACP), trying to advocate for a better functioning healthcare system for our patients and our physicians. Through the ACP, he was involved in the development of various aspects of health policy, served as governor of the Connecticut ACP Chapter, as a member of the Board of Regents, and then as the ACP President in 2019-20. He continues to be involved in advocacy at the Federal and State level through a number of organizations.

He is a member of the clinical faculty of the Yale School of Medicine as an Associate Clinical Professor. regularly teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. In 2019, he was elected to Mastership in the ACP, and in 2020 was elected to Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians.

With Northeast Medical Group, he worked for several years developing programs and structure in areas of Quality, Safety, and Clinical Integration, and he currently serves as one of the New Haven Regional Medical Directors.
