James E. Hansen, MD, is a therapeutic radiologist who specializes in treating a variety of conditions, including brain tumors, head and neck cancers, lung cancer, lymphoma, skin cancer, and cancers of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems.
Dr. Hansen employs advanced techniques such as stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy to target tumors precisely while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. He is committed to finding the right balance between effective treatment and protecting normal organ function, especially in patients with brain tumors.
“Every patient journey is unique. Please know that in good times or challenging times, you are never battling this disease alone,” Dr. Hansen says. As an associate professor of therapeutic radiology at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Hansen's research explores how certain autoantibodies—molecules generated in autoimmune disorders—might be harnessed to fight cancer.
Dr. Hansen is particularly excited about advancements in drug design that allow treatments to cross the blood-brain barrier, offering new hope for brain tumor patients. “I have never been more excited and optimistic about the future benefits of therapies that cross the blood-brain barrier and target brain tumors,” he explains. Dr. Hansen completed his medical training at UCLA School of Medicine, followed by a residency and chief residency in therapeutic radiology at Yale School of Medicine.
