Maxwell S. Laurans, MD

Dr. Maxwell Scott Laurans is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Yale School of Medicine. He has a full-time clinical practice at Yale-New Haven Hospital and the West Haven Veteran’s Administration Hospital, completing over 10,000 wRVUs yearly. Dr. Laurans' area of clinical interest is in the minimally invasive treatment of spinal disorders and spinal tumors. Dr. Laurans’ primary research focus is identifying ways in which to drive improved quality and value in health care delivery and determining practical implementation methods at Yale – New Haven Hospital. His research interests additionally include the efficient delivery of health care, appropriate use of information technology, clinical trials, outcomes studies, and evaluation of new technologies and innovations in the surgical disciplines. He is the Physician Lead for Neurosciences for Yale – New Haven Hospital, the Chair of the Perioperative Safety and Quality Committee, the Chair of the Operating Room Technology Assessment and Application Committee, and the Co-Chair of the Neurosciences Operations Council. Dr. Laurans additionally serves as the Physician Advisor for the Northeast Purchasing Coalition – A VHA sponsored $1.8B group purchasing organization (GPO) which is led by Yale – New Haven Hospital. In this role he has developed and implemented a framework for physician engagement in supply chain reform of physician preference items purchasing. Dr. Laurans was born and raised in Providence, RI and obtained his bachelor's degree in Economics at Yale University. He continued his education at the Yale School of Medicine where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree with Honors and was elected for admission into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA). After medical school, Dr. Laurans completed his residency in Neurological Surgery at Yale. Dr. Laurans also holds a Master’s of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.
