Biography - Paragi Rana, MD

Paragi Rana, MD, is an anesthesiologist who specializes in helping people manage acute and chronic pain. She uses local and regional anesthesia, which temporarily blocks nerve signals to lessen discomfort, and works with patients to improve day-to-day function and well-being.

“Acute pain serves a protective function, while chronic pain is a maladaptive response that affects daily functioning,” Dr. Rana says.

As an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Rana studies ways to make anesthesia safer and more effective, with a focus on reducing reliance on opioid medications. She strives to create care plans that address both immediate and ongoing needs.

“Perception of pain is our specific experience of pain,” Dr. Rana says. “If we apply a similar pain stimulus to two people, their experiences of that pain will be very different. Our management strategies for that individual must be unique."

Dr. Rana received her medical training from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and completed her residency and fellowship in anesthesiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
