Suresh Mohan, MD, is a surgeon who specializes in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the face, head, and neck. He performs facial reanimation surgery for facial paralysis, free tissue transfer for head and neck cancer reconstruction, aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty, skin cancer (Moh’s) reconstruction, facial trauma repair, gender affirmation surgery, corneal neurotization, and cosmetic treatment of the aging face.
A performing arts aficionado and music major in college, he has always had a particular appreciation for the intersection of science and art; he found plastic surgery at this juncture. Dr. Mohan was drawn to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery because of how much the smallest details in a person’s face impact their perceptions of themselves and their interactions with others on a daily basis.
“Our faces facilitate meaningful connections to the people in our lives,” Dr. Mohan says. “Thoughts, emotions, and intents are conveyed through our facial expressions. I see the opportunity to reconstruct or rejuvenate these facial features as a way to bring new confidence and contentment into the lives of my patients.”
Dr. Mohan works carefully to understand each patient’s individual concerns, provide them with tailored options, and help make decisions based on mutual respect and trust. Watching patients rediscover their lives, confidence, and purpose after a facial abnormality is what makes his work so rewarding.
An assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Mohan is also a researcher who spent time at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) investigating novel small molecule inhibitors for head and neck cancer. He completed a seven-year research track residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear at Harvard Medical School, where his research focused on understanding the Schwann cell response to nerve injury as applicable to clinical management of facial palsy. He continues his research in peripheral nerve regeneration at Yale.
