YNHH has implemented a Radiation Dose Management Program with the introduction of dose management software for all of our imaging modalities. This patient safety program will allow us to give the lowest appropriate dose of radiation to make a diagnosis. This is an important tool to assist in evaluating and maintaining optimal radiation dosage for our patients.
We are also a member of the Connecticut Hospital Association first-ever statewide radiation dose management collaborative. This collaborative will allow us to benchmark radiation dose from CT scans throughout the CHA network of hospitals across the state.
Yale New Haven Hospital has pledged to “image gently” when performing pediatric imaging exams. Medical imaging procedures can be lifesaving for children who are sick or injured, but children are more sensitive than adults to the radiation these procedures deliver. The Image Gently campaign was launched in 2008 to raise awareness about methods to reduce radiation dose during pediatric medical imaging exams.
The American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America formed the Joint Task Force on Adult Radiation Protection to address concerns about the surge of public exposure to ionizing radiation from medical imaging. The Joint Task Force collaborated with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists to create the Image Wisely campaign® with the objective of lowering the amount of radiation used in medically necessary imaging studies and eliminating unnecessary procedures.
