Medical teams at Yale New Haven Hospital specialize in hematology, which is the study of blood and its disorders. They provide diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of related diseases that impact both adult and pediatric patients. The team includes board-certified hematologists, as well as specialists in laboratory medicine and oncology. Specialty teams diagnose and treat disorders of red blood cell production, leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
In addition to their clinical care, our physicians are actively involved in education and training programs, as well as leading-edge research and clinical trials. Nurse specialists are an essential part of the hematology teams. Together, they are committed to advancing the science and practice of hematology by understanding the molecular basis of related diseases and transferring their research to advanced patient care.
Patients diagnosed with blood cancers, principally leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, are treated at Smilow Cancer Hospital. The Smilow Hematology Program is staffed by highly specialized physicians who lead teams comprising data managers, clinical nurses and care coordinators, providing each patient with individualized attention. Children referred for hematology/oncology services are seen in the Pediatric Specialty Center at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital where patients are treated by multidisciplinary teams.
Bone marrow transplant removes cells that are normally found in the bone marrow, filtering those cells and replacing them either to the patient or another person. The goal is to exchange healthy bone marrow cells into a person with unhealthy bone marrow.
Stem cell transplant, performed by experts at Smilow Cancer Hospital, is part of standard therapy for certain patients with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.
Chemotherapy treatment for patients with acute problems is offered at a dedicated outpatient facility that provides a convenient and comfortable location and daily access.
Yale New Haven Hospital offers a comprehensive program to meet the needs of patients with sickle cell anemia, also known as sickle cell disease. This program provides comprehensive services to meet the needs of patients and families living in the Greater New Haven area.
The Sickle Cell Program's objectives are to educate the community, patients, families and health care providers about sickle cell disease, and reduce the number of hospitalizations and emergency room visits.
