Neuromuscular Disorders

Yale New Haven's Neuromuscular Program is supported by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), and is a designated MDA-ALS clinic.

Our team of specialists provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, consultation and management of a range of neuromuscular disorders, including:

  • ALS-Lou Gehrig's disease
  • Muscular dystrophy (FSH, Duchene, Becker, limb-girdle, myotonic, Oculopharyngeal)
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Myopathy (polymyositis, dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis)
  • Neuropathy (CIDP, CMT and other inherited neuropathies, Guillain-Barre, diabetic neuropathy, and those undiagnosed)
  • Stiff-Person Syndrome
  • Carpel tunnel syndrome and related disorders

Our neurologists are expert at diagnosing neuromuscular diseases with the aid of electrodiagnostic techniques including electromyography (EMG) to evaluate nerve and muscle function and pinpoint the nature and cause of neuromuscular problems.

Research for Neuromuscular Diseases

Researchers at Yale New Haven Hospital are working to learn more about the causes of neuromuscular diseases and to find new and more effective treatments through clinical trials and through basic science laboratory research. Staff members serve on the North Eastern ALS Alliance and the World Federation of Neurology ALS Consortium.
