Overview

The Yale New Haven Hospital Neurotrauma Program is led by world-renowned multidisciplinary specialists with unparalleled expertise in diagnosing and treating the most challenging of traumatic brain disorders.

We specialize in the acute treatment, and long-term management of patients with traumatic injuries to the brain. Our program serves as a multidisciplinary hub where neurosurgeons, trauma surgeons, neurologists, physiatrists, rehabilitation specialists, neuropsychologists and other healthcare providers collaborate to optimize recovery and improve patients’ quality of life. We also provide family and caregiver education and resources, and work with community reintegration programs to support patients’ independence.

Conditions treated through the Neurotrauma Program

  • Blunt cerebrovascular injury
  • Cognitive, emotional and behavioral disorders
  • Diffuse axonal injury
  • Headaches
  • Hydrocephalus and cerebral spinal fluid leaks
  • Intracranial hemorrhage (epidural, subdural, intracerebral hematomas)
  • Seizures and post-traumatic epilepsy
  • Skull fractures
  • Traumatic brain injury

Rehabilitation

Recovery from neurotrauma often requires ongoing care and rehabilitation, tailored to a patient’s needs. Yale New Haven Hospital Rehabilitation Services offers outpatient evaluations that can be scheduled after a physician referral is received. Services include:

  • Cognitive assessments to determine subspecialty referral needs
  • Focused activities to support brain attention, organization and processing
  • Guidance in returning to normal activities or sports while your brain heals
  • Exercise programs to decrease dizziness, improve balance; restore strength, endurance; and reduce headaches
