Seven Signs of Diabetes

Did you know that diabetes is the eighth-leading cause of death in the United States? And that 1 in 5 adults don’t realize they have the disease? What else don’t you know about diabetes?

Diabetes is a silent disorder with symptoms that develop slowly over time. Most people don’t know they have diabetes until they get their blood sugar levels checked. Here are seven signs that you should mention to your doctor:

  • You’re urinating more often – especially at night.
  • You’re thirstier than normal.
  • You feel tired and sluggish.
  • You’re losing weight without trying.
  • Your vision seems blurry.
  • Your feet feel numb or tingly.
  • You keep getting urinary tract or yeast infections

Many people have diabetes without showing any symptoms at all. People at risk for diabetes, such as those with a family history of diabetes or are overweight, should see their doctor regularly for an evaluation.

Meet with an expert

Managing diabetes can be overwhelming. Learn how to take control of your diabetes, eat properly and manage medications. Services at the YNHH’s Center for Nutrition and Wellness include diabetes self-management education and support by our diabetes care and education specialists. If you have pre-diabetes, they also can show you how diet and lifestyle changes may be able to prevent the development of diabetes. The Center for Nutrition and Wellness is an American Diabetes Association Recognized Education Program.  For more information or to make an appointment, call 203-688-2422.

If you’re not in the New Haven area, you can join as a Remote Rider and complete your own route wherever you may be.

You may also consider sharing your energy and enthusiasm with the Closer to Free community as a volunteer. Volunteer opportunities are available to support the pre-ride check in, at the start/finish line and on the ride route as a member of the Road Crew.
