For years, Mary Johnson ran through the pain.
A runner since high school, she learned to push through the aches, strains and sore muscles that came with the sport even as she progressed to the sub-elite level – completing marathons in 3:06. But the pain that started in 2016 was not “normal.”
“It felt ‘crunchy’ in my hip. It was an untouchable, deep socket pain,” said Johnson, now 37.
Shortly after his son’s first birthday in 2019, Arnaldo Valentin received news that would change the course of his family’s life. Valentin had cirrhosis of the liver and would need a liver transplant. Like the thousands of patients in the U.S. waiting for a donor, he knew there was a chance he may never get the transplant he needed.
Until his wife, Crystal Vasquez, stepped in and made the decision to become her husband’s living donor.

The Smilow Cancer Hospital Survivorship Clinic is the only dedicated, multidisciplinary resource for adult cancer survivors in Connecticut. New treatment options and innovative cancer therapies are helping cancer patients live healthy lives. The growing number of cancer survivors requires new resources and healthcare specialists to care for the special concerns cancer survivors may have, including medical, social and emotional worries.
The Survivorship Clinic provides patients and their families with vital information on cancer prevention, wellness, support services and the latest cancer survivorship research. The clinic is for people who have recently completed treatment, are decades from diagnosis, or are living with cancer.
