A new series of classes from Employee and Family Resources (EFR) teaches employees how to recognize suicide warning signs and what to do if you think someone may be suicidal. QPR, which stands for Question, Persuade and Refer, is taught by certified instructor Rob Harrison, MD, YNHHS suicide prevention coordinator and is free for all Yale New Haven Health staff.
“We've been very pleased with the response to the QPR Suicide Prevention classes; over 250 employees have been trained,” said Bud Wassell, coordinator, EFR. “Dr. Harrison is very knowledgeable and sensitive in delivering this important information that can save lives.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 1.6 million people attempted suicide resulting in 49,476 deaths in the United States in 2022 (the most recent year data are available). But suicide is often preventable. Knowing the warning signs and what to do can save lives, which is exactly what attendees learn during the 90-minute QPR training.
“QPR is similar to CPR.” Wassell said “The class provides clear and direct ways to help someone if they are struggling. The feedback we’ve received from those who have taken the class is very positive. Attendees say they are much more confident in responding to someone who may be at risk.”
QPR classes are scheduled for:
May 23 – 3:30 pm
May 28 – 10:30 am
