Hospitalist education, training initiative launches at YNHH

Yale School of Medicine’s Program in Hospital Medicine recently launched an initiative to enhance the education and training of hospitalists who care for inpatients on various Yale New Haven Hospital York Street Campus Medicine units.

The Hospital Medicine Firm initiative provides trainees with a clinical rotation, educational curriculum and the formalized presence of hospitalists on a specific teaching team. It pairs hospitalists and senior resident physicians in an “apprenticeship” model.

“We have a new clinical rotation in our Internal Medicine Program, one specific to hospital medicine, which hasn’t existed before,” said Chris Sankey, MD, director of the Program in Hospital Medicine, Yale School of Medicine (YSM). “This is as exciting a time as ever to be involved in hospital medicine here at Yale.”

Sankey co-manages the new Hospital Medicine Firm with NEMG’s Anisha Advani, MD, associate director, YNHH Hospitalist Service.

“It has been a great partnership and collaboration between our group and the Program in Hospital Medicine,” Dr. Advani said. “From the hospitalist attending physicians’ side, it’s important to be able to bring the faculty who have expertise in doing this day in and day out, in caring for larger numbers of patients and sharing that skill set with PGY-3s (residents) as they start to think about a career beyond training.”

In a recent study, investigators at YSM and Yale New Haven Health found that hospitalist physicians’ workload – the total number of patients they care for daily – is rising in the U.S. YNHH’s Hospitalist Service’s daily census has grown by nearly 100 additional patients on average over the past three years.
