PIP Year-End Results FY2018
Employees performed well this year on 2018 Performance Incentive Plan (PIP) goals and earned a 2.03 percent payout out of a possible maximum 3 percent of salary during fiscal year 2018, which ended Sept. 30. The PIP award, which is over and above any annual merit increase, rewards employees for contributions toward reaching hospital goals.
“Congratulations and my thanks to employees for a job well done,” said Richard D’Aquila, Yale New Haven president. “Even though 2018 brought continued and increasing challenges, you persevered to meet and even exceed goals in many areas. Employees throughout the hospital should be proud of these accomplishments and motivated to meet the challenges ahead.”
To be eligible for the PIP award, employees must have worked at least 1,000 hours during the fiscal year 2018 payroll periods – Oct. 1, 2017 - Sept. 30, 2018 – and be active as of Dec. 6, 2018 when PIP is paid.
PIP results were measured in four hospital-wide performance areas: patient safety and quality, patient experience, employee engagement and financial performance. Each category received equal weight of 25 percent.
Patient safety and quality included two measures. Results for C. difficile infections – the number of patients who contracted the Clostridium difficile bacterial infection during hospital stays – did not reach the threshold goal. The second measure in this category, near-miss events, is the number of near misses or potential problems related to patient safety reported in the RL Solutions online event reporting system. Results exceeded the maximum goal.
Patient experience measured patients’ and families’ experiences at YNHH as expressed in Press Ganey surveys and included three measures:
Overall inpatient results, which measure the satisfaction of patients from adult units on both New Haven campuses and patients at the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital campuses, met the threshold goal.
Emergency Department measured the satisfaction of patients who visited a YNHH ED, including the York Street Campus adult and pediatric, Saint Raphael Campus and Shoreline Medical Center emergency departments. Results fell short of the threshold goal. Results for Ambulatory Services – the overall experience in Ambulatory Surgery, Heart and Vascular outpatient centers, Radiology and Outpatient Oncology – also fell below the threshold goal.
In the employee engagement category, employees exceeded maximum goals for participation in the Know Your Numbers Plus wellness program and Employee Engagement Survey.
Financial performance included the sole measure of the hospital’s operating margin, which also reached the maximum goal for FY2018.
PIP awards will be paid Thursday, Dec. 6.
