Yale New Haven Hospital unveiled two of the region's most advanced musculoskeletal operating rooms at the Saint Raphael Campus at a Feb. 9 open house and welcomed Mary O'Connor, MD, future director of the new Musculoskeletal Center at YNHH and Yale School of Medicine.
Open house guests had an opportunity to meet Dr. O'Connor, a national leader in orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal diseases, and tour the new ORs. The new ORs for orthopedic and spine procedures were designed with input from leading surgeons. Each includes a "wall of knowledge," with flat-screen monitors displaying diagnostic images and detailed patient information. The rooms also include other high-tech components designed to maximize quality and safety, and will serve as prototypes for future ORs at the Saint Raphael Campus.
Dr. O'Connor will officially join YNHH and Yale School of Medicine May 1 after 23 years with Mayo Clinic. She is a professor of orthopedic surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and was most recently chair of Orthopedics at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Dr. O'Connor is also medical director of the Mayo Clinic Integrity and Compliance Office and program director of the adult reconstructive fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Florida. She is leading pioneering stem cell research in degenerative joint diseases.
"We are delighted to have someone of Dr. O'Connor's caliber join our organization," said YNHH President Richard D'Aquila. "With her leadership, a team of physicians who are leading experts in their fields, and the most advanced facilities and technology, we are further enhancing Yale New Haven Hospital's status as a destination hospital for musculoskeletal care."
